Frequently asked questions
Why do I need a shuttle service or car transfer?
The Timber Trail is not a circuit but takes you from ‘A’ to ‘B’ therefore you need a shuttle/car transfer to return you to your beginning
What are the Shuttle options?
1. Shuttle Service
Take advantage of our pre-arranged shuttle service options available
2. Self Drive
Drive yourself to the start of the trail at either Pureora or Piropiro, then get picked up by a pre-arranged shuttle service provider at the end of your day who will take you back to your car or use our car transfer service.
3. Non-cycler driver
If you have a non cycling participant in your group they could do the shuttling for you using your own vehicle.
Can I be picked up from the Benneydale Bike Bach by a Shuttle provider?
Yes, but is subject to availability.
Are there hire bikes available?
Yes you can hire bikes from the providers noted above in the 'Bike Hire' Section.
How long will it take me to do the trail?
The first section from Pureora to Piropiro is 40kms, 4-5 hours, Grade 3 Intermediate. The second section Piropiro to Ongarue is 45kms, 4-5 hours, Grade 2 Easy. Depending on your fitness, the average person would expect to do the whole Timber Trial cycleway over two days, however if you are a fit experienced rider you could manage it all in a day.
Do I need to take food and water with me?
Yes most definitely - allow for stops along the way to refuel.
Is there cell coverage on the trail?
No cell ph coverage 95% of the time, so better still turn your phone off and just enjoy the ride amidst the beauty all around you! Carrying a personal locator beacon is advisable as this is a remote location.
Where do I start cycling?
While the whole Timber Trail can be done from either direction, generally cyclists begin at Pureora and end at Ongarue when doing a two day excursion. If you only want to do one day then you have an option of choice as to which section you prefer.
Where do I park my car if self driving?
At the Timber Trail Car park at the Nga Haerenga West Campsite.
Drive into Piropiro Flats (Waimiha), at the junction turn right and follow the markers/signs to the Timber Trail Car Park.
In the Timber Trail car park at the north end of Ongarue OR at the Bennett Rd Car Park 2.7km from Ongarue where track ends and meets the road.
